Training put into practice for rookies

http://www.illawarramercury.com.au/story/621430/cadets-hailed-after-pulling-boy-from-surf/?cs=300

Three cadet surf lifesavers put their training into practice for the first time to save a young boy from the surf at Coledale on Sunday afternoon.

Sixteen-year-old Aaron Dark and mates Riley Carney and Alex Smith, both 15, rescued the 10-year-old boy who got caught in a rip off Sharkeys Beach about 3.30pm.

The young surf lifesavers were carrying out a "roving patrol" at the unpatrolled beach when they saw people on the beach waving wildly to them to alert their attention to the unfolding drama in the water.

Well done guy's :-)

Davina does it again - World champion, 2012

Our very own Davina Strauss has held onto her 'World Champion' crown at the Rescue 2012 World Championships. Competing with a stress fracture in her foot, Davina won Gold medals in her age bracket for the Beach Sprint and Beach Flags events (What are these events?). She also came in at 9th place in the Open Womens Beach Flags. This is an achievement to be proud of without the injury - even more so with it. Congratulations Davina!!

If anyone is interested in learning to drive or crew the Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB), there is a course running on the 6th-7th October. You must be a surf club member and hold a current bronze medallion as a pre-requisite so if you don't already have this award and are interested for the future, let us know and we might be able to slot you into a course for that instead ;-)

Coledale Beach Holidays

The surf club operates a small and unique grassy campsite that borders right onto the golden sand. Coledale beach is beautifully sandwiched between the rolling blue surf of the pacific and the rolling green tree canopy of the Illawarra escarpment.

Just 1 hour south of Sydney CBD, the small beachside village of Coledale is accessed by the spectacular Grand Pacific Drive via the stunning Sea Cliff Bridge.

Well serviced from Sydney and the south coast by city rail trains and with regular local bus services. The stunning beach is bordered north and south by rocky outcrops that protect the beach from the worst of the weather, as well as offering excellent fishing spots. The beach is a great surfing spot, with the right conditions offering nice right and left hand breaks. Never as crowded as other comparable surf spots, Coledale Beach is a great location to enjoy the beach, swim, surf, fish, dive or just sit back, enjoy the views and sound of the surf at your doorstep. Regular visits by dolphins playing just off the beach and close views of migrating humpback and southern right whales just add to the experience.

The village itself offers a range of shops and eating-places including RSL, cafe, takeaway and more formal dining. Other local centers of Austinmer, Thirroul, Stanwell Park and Bulli are great to shop, eat, drink or browse amongst the galleries and boutiques. Just 5 minutes walk to Coledale rail station for direct lines north to Sydney and south to Wollongong, Kiama and Nowra.

Ideally positioned for short breaks from Sydney or for visitors to the area that want to be close to the attractions of Sydney, yet away from the hustle and bustle and close to nature (or for those on a tighter budget). Camping at Coledale beach offers a great location and a unique holiday experience.

Surf Club

The Club

Coledale Surf Life Saving Club was founded in 1913, since then the club has provided volunteer life savers who give their time and in one instance, their lives for the protection of the users of Coledale beach.

The club supplies patrols of life savers on weekends and public holidays during the summer months and is known as one of the smaller and friendlier clubs in the area.

It offers a range of training and amenities to its members including a good social side, both senior and junior clubs organize a range of social functions throughout the year, including regular family barbeques, band nights, quiz nights and movies.

The club can be contacted during patrol hours on 4268 2444.

Life Saving

The club operates inshore rescue boats as well as the more traditional board and tube rescue equipment. Training for surf rescue and first aid skills are held throughout the year.

Get down to the beach - New members are always welcome, regardless of previous experience, training is tailored to suit the individual’s experience, skill and fitness level. A well equipped gym for members only, helps with the fitness.

So give it a try, fun, excitement, fitness, skills and a sense of doing a vitally important job for the community. Just give a little time and commitment and we’ll give the rest.

Surf Sports

Coledale has a long tradition of surf sports, the most visible being the surf boat rowers. The crews can be see in action from the beach regularly during the season and compete at local and state level events.

Junior Surf Life Saving

Nippers and Rookies

The junior club is thriving with a great team of managers, coaches and parent helpers, not forgetting the 200 +  enthusiastic youngsters from aged 5 to 15. A range of surf, first aid and beach safety skills are taught and competitive training in beach and surf events tests the fitness and skill levels in preparation for south coast and state carnivals.

Rookies

The 14 - 16 year olds are Rookies and will be expected to complete their SRC and work toward their Bronze Medallion. The emphasis with these members is preparation to become patrolling members, they will be trained in surf rescue and resusitation. There are also team building and social events planned throughout the season.
For the last few years the Rookies have gone on camp in January to gain their SRC's, Bronze medallion, and IRB crewman. These camps are looked forward to every year as we travel up the coast the Nelson Bay. Last year to save money for our major trip away, we had the Rookie camp at our very own beach and camping ground. This year? Stay tuned..

Davina Strauss - World Champion!

A lot of you would not be aware but our shy quiet beach powerhouse Davina Strauss who has already done the club proud with winning gold at the Masters Aussies 2010 in Flags has gone better than that.

Davina has competed in the Rescue 2010 (Lifesaving World Championships) in Alexandria Egypt and has brought herself and Coledale SLSC the ultimate sports accollade.

Davina has won two Gold medals in her age group 30-34 in the beach flags event and also beach sprint. An awesome acheivment but she wasn't prepared to stop there.

Davina also competed in the open womens events for beach flags and beach sprints and has taken out the bronze medal in the flags event against women who were 19, 20, 21 "much younger than herself"!

We now have a WORLD CHAMPION amongst us and it couldn't happen to a nicer dedicated person.

Congratulations Davina

Sydney Water Series Surf Carnivals

The following information relates to the Sydney Water series surf carnivals leading up to Christmas.

Round 2               6th November at Shellharbour

Round 3               27th November at North Wollongong

Round 4               18th December at Warilla

Report Times for all the carnivals are 8.00am for the Nippers and for Senior competitors 12pm.

The entry for these carnivals must be in by Friday 22nd October, which means we need to be  notified by Monday 18th October to give us time to complete all the entry details and organize payment through the club. Please contact Michael on  0438 858 407 or email michael.schnabel@hillross.com.au.

Coledale SLSC will cover the entry fees, which include all the above carnivals, however it is a minimum requirement that you must attend at least 2 out of the 4 carnivals. As Anthony said in the original email you may have to do some duty on the day as well.

Late entries are available only on the day of competition. An extra $10 late entry fee will be charged which will not be reimbursed by the club.

I have included the following link from the NSW Surf Lifesaving website which gives more information.

 http://dev3.powerfront.com/surflifesaving/www/463/1003981/displayarticle/1004865.html

If you have not done your proficiency swim, (the run, swim, run in the surf) you must complete that on Sunday 24th Oct, which is our next nippers day.

You can win prizes from these carnivals and all entries will receive a souvenir race singlet.
